Citizens of Bucharest have access to some of the most modern hospitals in the country, such as Coltea, which was refurbished in 2011 using funds from a ninety million Euro EU grant. At nearly 300 years old Coltea hospital is the oldest hospital in Bucharest, and specialises in treating oncological (cancer) and cardiac (heart) patients. There are also many other large hospitals, small clinics and some private hospitals located in Bucharest. Many serious diseases have been eradicated in Bucharest thanks to an organised system of vaccination. Since the 17th century Romanians have found ways to fight smallpox, with early ad hoc methods being replaced by formal administration of a shot at the turn of the 19th century. These days all minors are required to have vaccinations against diphtheria, rubella, polio, tetanus, TB and hepatitis B.
Private Healthcare in Bucharest functions as one would expect with private clinics; direct payment is the norm and one can typically expect “higher than average” service and care quality. This is not a rule, but only an average. In Bucharest, private clinics do allow for private insurance plans, or some even offer monthly payment plans and packages for specialty services. Private Medical Care in Bucharest is considered to be a bit pricey from the point of view of Romanian locals, and while that may be true, many foreigners find the prices quite appealing when compared to the medical care/services in their Country of origin. Interestingly enough, within the past few years these medial services have gained appeal within the Romanian Middle-Class.
